Is it possible to organise the image matrix with different widths and heights?
I would like 4 columns in two rows:
Top row would include a long portrait image. The Second Row would include a double column width image. The rest of the images would be 1 column deep and square.
I can't see an attachment option on this forum, so I can't attach a diagram.

With problem version Portfolio can't customize the layout as you like, Only JUX portfolioPro such displays,
If you wish to do so please buy extension JUX Portfolio Pro

OK, I've purchased PRO version and arranged the images the way I want (Packery).
Now how do I show the item description?
The light box only shows the image - no description.

You are referring to the JUX Portfolio, Not JUX Portfolio Pro
If want show description : Please go to back-end -> modules JUX Portfolio -> Tab Hover Option-> Popup-> Select 1 Column
